Matcha latte near Sant Feliu de Guíxols: what's there and what's worth the detour

Sant Feliu de Guíxols has plenty of cafés. On the seafront, near the market, by the port. Most of them have a "matcha latte" on the menu — order one and they'll make it. What varies is what that matcha actually is.

Five minutes away by car, in S'Agaró, is Dirty Rabbit. We opened in November 2024 with a menu built from scratch around specific suppliers. The matcha wasn't a marketing decision.

What makes a good matcha latte

  1. The ingredient matters more than most people expect. Ceremonial matcha has a completely different flavour profile from food-grade — smoother, greener, without the bitterness that makes a lot of people think they don't like matcha. What they don't like is usually that version of it.
  2. Dose counts. We use 2g per cup, the standard measure to get recognisable flavour without going overboard. There's an extra strong option if you want more intensity, for a little extra.
  3. Preparation: the matcha is whisked with cold water first, then the milk goes in. Skip that step and the powder clumps at the bottom. It's a detail you can't see but you notice.

What matcha you can order

  • Classic matcha latte — hot or iced, with plant milk available
  • Orange matcha — with orange juice instead of milk (dairy-free, more refreshing)
  • Extra strong — higher dose, for a little more

Where to find a good matcha latte near Sant Feliu de Guíxols

Dirty Rabbit is at Avinguda Platja d'Aro 275, S'Agaró — five minutes from Sant Feliu along the GI-682.

The matcha we use is from REQ Matcha, a project founded by a Japanese man who lives in Japan and travels to the plantations to select the tea directly. It comes to Barcelona and from there to us. Short chain, traceable.

In central Sant Feliu you'll find spots with sea views. If the matcha itself is what you're after, the detour to S'Agaró makes sense.

Why matcha is everywhere but good matcha is rare

There's a simple economic reason: Japanese ceremonial matcha costs significantly more than generic green powder. If a café sells a matcha latte at the same price as a regular coffee, it's worth asking where the saving comes from.

Specialty coffee arrived late to the Costa Brava compared to Barcelona or Girona city. Matcha followed the same pattern. The places that took coffee seriously also took alternatives seriously. Not many in the area, but they're here.
