Matcha latte in Girona: options in the city and one on the coast

Girona has a real specialty coffee scene. There are several places in the Barri Vell and the Eixample working with quality matcha — this isn't an article that's going to pretend you need to leave Girona to find something decent. You don't.

What also exists, 35 minutes along the C-65 towards the Costa Brava, is Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró. A specialty café that opened in November 2024. It makes sense if you're combining matcha with a beach day, or if you're already heading down to the coast.

What makes a good matcha latte

  1. Japanese ceremonial matcha tastes different from generic powder, and the difference isn't subtle. Ceremonial is smooth, with a clean green colour and an almost sweet finish. Generic powder tends to be bitter in a way that makes people think they don't like matcha — usually what they don't like is that version of it.
  2. Dose matters. We serve 2g of ceremonial matcha per cup. It's the standard to get flavour that's recognisable without being heavy or bitter. Want more body? There's an extra strong option for a little more. Not a gimmick — the difference is real.
  3. Whisking cold with water before adding milk. Without that step, the matcha doesn't dissolve properly. It's a technical detail that separates places that thought it through from those that didn't.

What matcha you can order

  • Classic matcha latte — hot or iced, with plant milk available
  • Orange matcha — with orange juice instead of milk (dairy-free, more refreshing)
  • Extra strong — higher dose, for a little more

Where to find a good matcha latte near Girona

In Girona city: look for specialty cafés in the Barri Vell and Eixample. There are places working seriously with coffee that have also brought in quality matcha. Worth researching before you order anywhere.

If you're planning a trip to the Costa Brava: Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró, Avinguda Platja d'Aro 275. The matcha we use is from REQ Matcha — a Barcelona project run by a Japanese founder who lives in Japan and selects the tea at origin. We serve 2g of ceremonial grade, hot or cold, with plant milk available.

35 minutes from Girona. Not for every day, but if the trip makes sense for other reasons, the matcha is here.

Why matcha is everywhere but good matcha is rare

Girona was one of the first Catalan cities outside Barcelona to develop a serious specialty coffee culture. That gave matcha a head start compared to other parts of the province. But even in Girona, not every place that offers it changed supplier when they added it to the menu.

The question worth asking before you order: do they know what brand the matcha is? If they don't, it's probably generic.
