Matcha near Platja d'Aro: what's out there and what's worth it

If you've searched for matcha in Platja d'Aro and come up short, that makes sense. Most cafés in the area carry something called a "matcha latte" — green powder dissolved in warm milk. It works, technically. But it's not the same thing.

It's worth knowing what to look for before you order.

What makes a good matcha

  1. It starts with Japanese ceremonial-grade or premium green tea, whisked cold with a little water before the milk goes in.
  2. The colour is deep green, almost bright. If it comes out yellowish or dull, the powder is low quality.
  3. It shouldn't taste bitter. A properly made matcha is smooth, with a mild sweetness underneath.

This isn't snobbery — it just tastes different, and has nothing in common with what most places serve.

Where to find good matcha near Platja d'Aro

Dirty Rabbit is in S'Agaró, at Avinguda Platja d'Aro 275 — about 10 minutes by car from central Platja d'Aro.

We opened on 1 November 2024 with a menu built around suppliers we can name. The matcha we use is organic, from REQ Matcha — a Barcelona-based project run by a Japanese founder who lives in Japan and sources the tea directly. We serve 2g of ceremonial matcha per cup, which is the standard dose. Want something stronger? We have an extra strong option for a little more, and oat milk if you don't do dairy.

You'll find other options in Platja d'Aro centre. If you want sea views and a place to sit, they work fine. If the matcha itself matters to you, the detour is worth it.

Why matcha is everywhere but good matcha is rare

Matcha took off across Catalonia around 2022, pushed by Barcelona café culture and Instagram. The problem: many places added "matcha latte" to the menu without changing suppliers. Ceremonial-grade powder costs significantly more than food-grade, and you can taste the difference.

On the Costa Brava, the trend arrived later. The places that actually care about where their matcha comes from are the same ones that care about where their coffee comes from. There aren't many, but they exist.

Frequently asked questions about matcha in Platja d'Aro

Is there anywhere in Platja d'Aro that serves ceremonial matcha?

Options in central Platja d'Aro are limited for ceremonial-grade matcha. The nearest place with quality organic matcha is Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró, 10 minutes away.

How much does a matcha latte cost around here?

Between €3.50 and €5 at Dirty Rabbit. The price reflects the ingredient cost.

Can I order iced matcha in summer?

Yes. We have it year-round, hot or cold, with oat milk if you prefer.

Is matcha a good alternative to coffee?

Depends what you're after. Matcha has caffeine, but it releases more slowly because of L-theanine. A lot of people choose it for that reason — energy without the spike and crash you get from coffee. If coffee makes you jittery, matcha usually sits better.

Where exactly is Dirty Rabbit?
