Matcha latte on the Costa Brava: what exists, what doesn't, and where to find it
The Costa Brava has plenty of cafés. In high season almost every village has several. What's harder to find is a café working with real Japanese-origin matcha — not green powder arriving in unlabelled bags, dissolved straight into warm milk.
That's the reality of matcha on the Costa Brava: it arrives late, and when it does, it often arrives in a compromised form. There are exceptions. Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró is one of them.
What makes a good matcha latte
- Where the matcha comes from. Japanese ceremonial green tea has its own flavour — vegetal, smooth, with a slightly sweet finish. Food-grade powder, which most cafés use, is a different category: more bitter, less complexity. At Dirty Rabbit we use REQ Matcha, a Barcelona project founded by a Japanese man who lives in Japan and selects the tea directly at the plantations.
- The dose. 2g of ceremonial matcha is the standard amount for a cup that actually tastes like something without being heavy. There's an extra strong option for a little more. The difference is noticeable, especially if you usually order a double espresso by habit.
- Correct preparation: whisking the matcha with cold water before adding milk. Without that step, the powder doesn't integrate properly. Not a small detail — it's what separates a smooth, homogeneous latte from one with green clumps at the bottom.
What matcha you can order
- Classic matcha latte — hot or iced, with plant milk available
- Orange matcha — with orange juice instead of milk (dairy-free, more refreshing)
- Extra strong — higher dose, for a little more
Where to find good matcha latte on the Costa Brava
Dirty Rabbit is in S'Agaró, Avinguda Platja d'Aro 275 — a central point on the southern Costa Brava. From Tossa de Mar, about 20 minutes. From Palamós, about 15. From Begur, about 25. From central Girona, 35 minutes along the C-65.
We opened on 1 November 2024 — off-season, deliberately. We're not a summer-only place. Matcha is available year-round, hot or cold, with dairy or plant milk.
Other specialty cafés exist on the Costa Brava. Most, however, haven't applied the same care to matcha. If you're travelling along the coast and matcha matters to you, it's worth checking the location before you order.
Why matcha is everywhere but good matcha is rare
Tourism pressure on the Costa Brava pushes cafés to stock what international visitors already know — and matcha latte is now standard across northern Europe, the UK, and Australia. The problem is that adding the line to the menu doesn't guarantee the right ingredient.
Ceremonial Japanese-origin matcha has a shorter, more expensive supply chain than generic. The places that care about that tend to be the same ones that care about coffee. On the Costa Brava, that's a small group. But we're in it.
