Chai latte in Girona: what's in the city and what's on the coast
Girona has a reasonably active specialty café scene. For chai latte, there are options in the city — some with syrup, some with more thought behind them. It's worth knowing what you're ordering.
Dirty Rabbit is in S'Agaró, about 35 minutes from Girona along the C-65 or the motorway. We're not going to tell you to come out of your way on a workday. But if you're already heading to the Costa Brava, or if you have a reason to be in the area, we're here.
What makes a good chai latte
- The spice blend defines everything. Cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, black pepper — real masala chai has a complex flavour profile. The syrup that most places use simplifies that into something sweet and one-dimensional.
- A supplier doesn't need to be famous to be good. Ours is Awachai, from Isère, France — 100% organic masala chai. Not a name you'll see everywhere. We chose it because the blend is serious.
- Dirty chai solves a common question. Chai or coffee? The answer can be both: chai latte with a shot of La Cabra espresso. More energy, more complexity. For anyone who wants both at once.
Where to find good chai latte near Girona
In Girona city, there are cafés with chai on the menu. For organic masala chai with real spices, the nearest option outside the city is Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró — 35 minutes along the C-65 or the AP-7.
We opened in November 2024. Three versions: classic chai latte (hot or iced), iced chai year-round, and dirty chai with espresso. Plant milk available. €3.50 to €5. Large terrace, WiFi, good morning light.
For anyone who makes the Girona-to-Costa Brava run regularly, S'Agaró sits on the road between Sant Feliu and Platja d'Aro. For anyone coming from Girona specifically for the chai — that's your call, not ours to make.
Why chai latte is everywhere but good chai is rare
Girona, as a university city with growing tourism, has more variety than most of Catalonia. But the same pattern holds: most chai versions going around use syrup. It's the economical, easy choice for a place where chai isn't a central product.
Places working with real masala chai tend to be the same ones working with specialty coffee, slow-fermentation bread, and quality plant milks. The standard crosses the whole menu, not just one item.
Frequently asked questions about chai latte in Girona
Are there cafés in Girona serving chai with real spices?
There are options in Girona. Most use syrup. For organic masala chai with a real spice blend, the nearest option outside the city is Dirty Rabbit in S'Agaró, 35 minutes away.
Is it worth going from Girona to S'Agaró for a chai?
Depends. If you're already going to the coast, yes — we're on the road between Sant Feliu and Platja d'Aro. If you're making the trip from central Girona just for chai, 35 minutes is a personal decision.
What is iced chai and why do you have it year-round?
Iced chai is masala chai served cold. Most cafés don't offer it outside summer. We have it year-round because the spices work just as well cold, and some people prefer it that way regardless of the weather.
What's the difference between dirty chai and a regular coffee?
A regular coffee is espresso and milk. Dirty chai adds the masala blend — cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, black pepper — to the espresso and milk. The flavour is completely different: warmer, spiced, less bitter.
How do I get to Dirty Rabbit from Girona?
Take the C-65 towards Sant Feliu de Guíxols, then on to Platja d'Aro, or the AP-7 exit for Platja d'Aro. We're at Avinguda Platja d'Aro 275, S'Agaró. About 35 minutes from central Girona. Parking right across the road.
